Overview

Located in the heart of George Town, Penang, 五福 炭香福建蝦面·鹵面 Wufoo Hokkien Prawn Noodle·Lor Mee offers a compelling take on traditional Hokkien prawn noodles and lor mee, two beloved local classics. This restaurant stands out with its charcoal-infused wok-fried Hokkien mee, delivering a smoky aroma that instantly awakens the senses. Alongside, their lor mee enchants with a rich, spiced broth, balanced well by tender meat and fresh herbs, preserving the comforting essence of Penang’s culinary heritage.

The dining experience here is straightforward yet inviting. The bright, clean space on Lebuh Katz is a beacon amidst the night market hustle, attracting both locals craving familiar flavors and food enthusiasts eager to explore authentic Hokkien fare. The order process is efficient—guests select add-ons like crispy roast pork, ginger pork balls, and tou ki at the queue’s start, then customize their noodles and broth before finding a comfortable seat.

What truly defines Wufoo is the interplay of flavors and textures. The prawn mee combines succulent shrimp with fresh vegetables tossed in a savory, well-balanced sauce. Their lor cham th'ng, blending prawn soup and lor mee gravy, offers a lighter yet flavorful alternative that caters to palates seeking nuance over intensity. The wide variety of add-ons enhances the noodle bowls with diverse textures—from silky pork liver to springy meatballs—allowing each diner to tailor their meal to personal preference. While these extras enrich the dish, they may soften the purity of the broth, a point noted by discerning patrons.

This brand thrives among those who appreciate traditional Penang hawker dishes without the tourist frills. Its loyal following attests to its addictive qualities—noodles cooked to just the right bite and broths that evoke nostalgia without being cloyingly sweet. While the pricing of add-ons can push the bill upward, the fair pricing of the core dishes ensures accessibility to a wide audience, from casual diners to dedicated food explorers.

Overall, 五福 炭香福建蝦面·鹵面 is a respectful nod to Penang’s rich noodle culture. It captures the essence of Hokkien prawn mee and lor mee, wrapped in a modern dining setting that invites repeat visits. For those seeking a comforting bowl with customizable layers of flavor, this spot promises a rewarding taste of Penang’s storied hawker roots.

This place offer Lor Mee, Prawn Mee and Mix. Easy to locate at night as they are the only bright store open in this street. Ordering: Grab a bowl at the start of the queue and pick the different variety of addons yourself. At the end of the queue, the boss will take your order of noodle choices, soup choices. Either way, you can add more addons if you forgot as long as the noodle is not out yet. If it’s not too busy, they give you an order number stand and deliver to you. Seating and environment: Comfortable and clean. Food: 4/5 If you like multiple addon, this is good. The crispy pork, ginger pork ball and tou ki is fantastic addon. However, possibly due to the addons, the soup is not as “pure”. Hence my lower points. However, if without addons, I think this is good. Price: slightly pricey due to the add ons. May hit RM15-20 depends how you load up. Basic noodle set is standard pice. So fair enough as you pay what you picked.

Very nice noddles cooked to perfection. The broth mixture of the Prawn & Lor Mee is definitely the choice to go. It's very popular for the local but not a tourist place with high ratings. I've tasted so many here and this is the best. Highly recommended and addictive. Feel like going again every day seriously. Hahahaha.

The vendor makes a commendable attempt to recreate the old-school kor cha bi tradition, though it falls just short of achieving its full potential. This place delivers nostalgic flavours with a modern flair. The broth, while gently sweet and pleasant on the palate, lacks the deep, smoky intensity that once defined the iconic bowls from Penang’s golden era of hawker fare. It evokes a memory but doesn’t quite overwhelm it. What truly draws the crowd and enhances the dining experience is the generous selection of add-ons: tender bak kut, silky pork liver, crispy roast pork, springy meatballs, and braised intestines, all prepared to offer variety in texture and richness of flavour. If not for this impressive offering, it would be just another ordinary Hokkien mee. Overall, this spot satisfies the appetite of casual Hokkien mee followers, though it may not quite fulfil the expectations of fervent purists. It does stir fond recollections of hawker stalls past, and compliments are due for paying a modest tribute to Penang’s enduring culinary heritage.

Latest visit : Came again for supper & this time managed to get hold of the roasted pork. It's not as good as promoted. Very normal, just like anywhere else. The pricing of the extra ingredients is really ceiling price. It was super expensive. 1 mini meat ball or mini quail egg cost RM1. Simply take a few items & your bowl of will cost RM20 1st visit : It's the latest hype right now. There are so many bloggers recommending this place. I'm glad to know that they open till late night as I'm a supper goer. Visited on a Saturday night around 10.30 pm, but many items have already sold out. I'm so disappointed that the roasted pork is sold out since everyone is saying that it's really good. Even the soup is limited, so only able to order cham or pure lor. Since you're open till 12.30 am, maybe try preparing a sufficient amount in order to avoid disappointment. The add-on ingredients are quite pricey. Taste wise is good. Concentrated & flavourful.

A clean and pleasant place to dine. I tried original prawn mee n my wife had the chumpo ( the locals called it Lor Chua Tng) basically Lor Mee gravy mixed with prawn noodle soup. Must say the taste is quite nice. Won’t lose out to the famous ones. It may be slight thinner in texture and umami but that quite alright especially if you prefer not to overpowering taste good. And the best part, they got many nice side ingredients for your picking. But the bill can shoot up a bit. But you can always choose to stick to just normal standard n large bowls are just RM6.50 n Rm7.00.

Was told this was the next best place to venture in for hock kien mee, loh mee or lor Chan t'ng. Boy they were right. What brightens the meal is when you can customise and add on to your liking. Place is bright and clean There are many choices of topping you can add on on top the current basic bowl. Soup is soulful, umami and full body of flavour that doesn't leave you thirsty after eating. Meat is fresh n clean. You can easily get a table but the Chef makes every bowl one by one, hence wait is rather long. They have quite an array of drinks. Fuchuk soy barley is tasty n smooth, sweetness just nice. No baby chair Street parking somewhat difficult to find. But if you don't mind walking a little I am sure that is fine. Cos walking for good food is worth it!
